Frequently Asked Questions
- Who is eligible to participate in MHS programs?
MHS programming is open to children and adults with a variety of physical disabilities. Check out our Guidelines for Participation on the Participate page for the details.
- Does MHS offer more than skiing?
Yes! Even though our name says “skiing” we do so much more. In the winter, you can join MHS for skiing, snowboarding, nordic skiing and snowshoeing. If you are looking for summer activities, join MHS for golf, cycling or paddling.
- How much do lessons with MHS cost?
Nothing! All lessons with MHS are 100% free of charge, winter and summer – including your lift ticket/trail pass, your equipment and the high qualified instruction you will receive.
- Do I need my own equipment?
Nope. MHS has equipment to fit many shapes and sizes. We are ready to find the right equipment for your needs. If you already own your own equipment, you are welcome to use it during your lesson, though you may have to have it checked for safety first (like a binding check on your skis or an annual tune up on a cycle).
- How do I get involved in MHS programs?
Getting started is easy! All of the forms you need to get started with us are just a click away. Check out the Participate page for more information.
- What is a typical lesson with MHS like?
Fun…Safe…Educational… All of the lessons at MHS are taught by experienced and trained volunteers. When you arrive for a confirmed lesson, you will need to check in. In the winter there is usually a check in sheet; in the summer let one of the staff know you have arrived. If you need one, you will receive a lift ticket/trail pass when you check in.
After everyone has arrived, you will be paired up with volunteer instructors for your lesson. Talk to those volunteers about your goals for the lesson – they are there to work with you. You and your volunteers can decide when to take breaks and when to stop for lunch (for full day lessons). At the end of the day, you will need to return any equipment you used and the pass you checked out (at Sunday River only). This is also a good time to talk to your instructors about your goals. Did you meet your goals for the lesson? What do you want to work on next time?
- Do you have directions to the different MHS programs?
Directions are available to all MHS programs on the Contact Us page.
- Is transportation available to MHS programs?
We would be happy to help you get to your MHS lesson. One way people get to lessons is by carpooling with volunteers or other participants. We can provide you with the names and phone numbers of people in your area that would be willing to provide transportation. All you have to do is call!
Also, new in 2008, MHS is sponsoring transportation from the Portland area one day a week. “The bus” will leave from a central location in Portland and bring participants up to Sunday River or the Sunday River Inn. This year, “the bus” will be heading to the mountain on Wednesdays. Seats are limited, so if you feel this would be a good option for you, give the MHS office a call (800-639-7770)
- What do I do if I need to cancel my lesson with MHS?
Just pick up the phone and call (800-639-7770). We understand that life is unpredictable and you may need to change your confirmed schedule. We ask that you contact us at least 24 hours in advance so that we can fill your lesson space. Our phone is always on – feel free to leave a message.
- How will I know if MHS cancels lessons because of weather?
We love snow here at MHS, but we understand that you may not want to drive in it. MHS only cancels winter lessons in the case of bad traveling conditions. If you think this may be the case, call the office (800-639-7770) to hear any cancellation information. The machine is updated by 6:30 AM if lessons are cancelled for the day. If we are still holding lessons but you do not want to travel in the inclement weather, just leave a message letting us know. In the summer, call the office for more information about programs if there is inclement weather.
